i know that you are a big fan of hip hop, did that trigger your
desire to djing and production? how did jungle and drum and
bass came in your life?
Yeah when I first started out as a DJ I was pretty young and
only intoHip-Hop, so were my whole crew, and quite a few of
us bought decks at the same stage so there were people to
bounce off and spa with.... Itwasn't till a few years later that
we discovered dance music, mostlythanks to kiss FM who
back then in 95 had a great Jumping Jack Frost show
straight after their flagship Hip-Hop show. We all pretty much
switched over and started buying Jungle. Production came
much later, Iwas a bit older, had a bit more money in my
pocket, and had began tomingle with DJs outside of my crew
who knew how to produce and could give me tips to start out.
Without their help I would never have gone further than just
being a DJ.
Your sound is very cinematic and tech influenced, is this a
correct assumption? tell us more about your sound.
Yeah I love the instruments and conventions of techno but
the beats just aren't funky enough for me, although I
understand them more as I'm getting older. So I borrow
ideas from that sound, I love the sense of tension that you
get from cinematic and ambient electronica, and merging all
those elements together along with the tweaked-bass 98
style tech dnb is probably my favorite style in the studio.. I've
always had a soft spot for deep hypnotic liquid stuff too.
what hardware/software do you use to produce?
Mac g5 with Logic 7, Yamaha O1V desk, RME Hammerfall
Soundcard, Mackie monitors, Neuman TLM170 mic
.
do you think you are too technical at what you do?
I like attention to detail but what I do isn't really all that
technical compared to many artists out there, its just music
with an in-depth palette of subtle sounds... what does get
technical is the amount of automation in my tracks but again,
its the basic I tweak, the subtle factors.
who are the artists that you are feeling at the moment?
(dnb and non dnb)
IData, ASC, Enei + Implex, Icicle, Proxima, Noisia, Phace,
Alix Perez, Gas, Martyn, Kode 9, Burial, Kryptic Minds.
how do you feel about drum and bass at the moment, with
artistslike yourself, Data, Bop, Instra:mental just to name a few.
do you think it¥s a new breaking point for dnb?
Potentially, but it needs people to make their own stamp, there
is hell of a lot of instra:mental immitation stuff getting produced
and I think some of the newer artists can find that you can be
minimal and percussively stark and have your own sound still...
Breakage does the dubwise thing, Instra & D'Bridge got that
'Brave new world' sound, Data and I are doing the 'drones and
cinematica' industrial tech vibe, theres lots of angles to go
down and I think as long as people try and hold their own
ground it'll keep exciting
You are going to release an album on critical, how is that
coming up?
Music is still being written but its close to completion, There's
collabs with Noisia, Icicle and a couple with Alix Perez done
already, few more things to sow up and quite a complex
artwork project to get drawn.... Musically its very different to
much of what I've put out already, should be dropping close to
the end of the year. |
